While filming at 2020 media day, there was a lot of downtime and waiting around with some of our athletes so it was a perfect opportunity for a few mini photoshoots. When working with a team it is always my main goal to make sure I gain the trust of all our players and that they are comfortable with me constantly following them around with a camera so moments like these make me realize that all the time spent getting to know our team really does pay off.
While I was not with the Galaxy yet when Beckham was playing, I was able to start off the 2019 season with a few special Beckham moments I'll never forget. I was covering some fan photos and warm ups when all of the sudden I see Beckham had come back from his statue reveal to sign a few jerseys for some fans. It was one of those moments that was a little unexpected and I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
In 2019 I was going around to different media day stations and getting some behind the scenes photos of our players. Since I was still getting to know everyone and learning who was comfortable with having my camera in their face and who wasn't yet, it allowed me to be a bit more of a fly on the wall and get to capture the personalities of our players. From Romain's signature pose to Gio always brightening up the room with plenty of laughter, it will always be one of my favorite events I've been able to cover.
Pavon had just arrived in LA and I am always very conscious of giving our players personal space from my camera when they first arrive but from the moment he walked in the stadium, without speaking a word of English yet, he was able to make it clear to me that I didn't need to worry about that. Because of how quickly Pavon adapted and how comfortable he was with having all these cameras around, all the photos felt much more personal than a typical arrival shoot.
I had just officially started covering Galaxy ii games and was still getting to know everyone and how things worked when during a game, one of our players Frank made a point of running straight to my camera after his goal...and then every other goal after that too and it was the best warm welcome any photographer could get!
Although taken at a preseason game, to me this shot really set the tone for all our future games with Chicharito. It was one of the first times I saw him in action and I think the face on the Chicago player in the back just says it all.
It had always been my dream to document a playoff game so when I heard I would be going to LAFC for the 2019 playoffs I told myself "please let something special and memorable happen for me to capture" and sure enough, Zlatan scored what at the time, I didn't know would be his last goal with us and ran straight in my direction with his signature arms out, celebration pose.
When I found out that we could go on the field during pre-game, I knew a huddle photo was a bucket list shot I had to cross off. Being too short to get one from above, Galaxy ii made sure to always leave a small gap in the circle for me to fit my camera into.
As a sports photographer, some of the most memorable and rewarding types of photos to get are the celebrations! From Pontius' close up celebration towards the fans, to Sebastian's post game field celebration, and Zlatan's in the moment group hug from across the field, there's never a celebration that doesn't make it onto my favorites list!
This moment was so special to me for several reasons. It was my first season with Galaxy (2018) and the whole reason I became a fan of soccer and wanted to start to pursue a job here was because of working with Gio and Jona on a kids camp they started in the summer of 2017. I had tried out just about every sport and was positive I had fallen in love with football but after taking photos at the Dos Santos kids camp, the energy and joy the brothers and their entire team who put the camps together brought to the field was unlike anything else I worked before. From then on, I decided I wanted a job with their team. This goal would finally come true in 2018 and I've been lucky enough to be a part of documenting their journey not only with Galaxy and their Dos Santos kids camp but with Mexico as well. What makes this particular shot of the two together stand out though is that although we didn't know it at the time, this was the last time they would be on the field together as teammates and it is a memory I'm very thankful I was able to capture.
One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to capture the close friendships the players have with each other both on and off the field. It's not only a photo that speaks to the fans but is a memory that these players will always have with each other as well which is what makes these shots so rewarding to take.
There would be no excitement at games without the support of fans and at Galaxy, we have the best which is why its always important to turn around and point the camera at them too!
One of the best feelings is walking back from focusing on the fans and being right in front of a goal! While you can always try to plan to be in the right place at the right time, it is hard to predict when a goal will happen and where the celebration will be but there's no better feeling than when the timing of a celebration and where you're at line up perfectly!
During the 2019 Season I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to New York with our Special Olympics Unified team and document their trip! There was never a dull moment and it was great to capture just how close of a bond this team has.
Sometimes the quiet moments in a busy setting is the most impactful. A room full of camera equipment, staff and other players were all around but these couple calm seconds of Sacha before he started filming will always be one of my favorites.
While games will always be exciting, there are always some special moments during training that won't happen anywhere else. In this particular moment, Zlatan is sitting back after some recovery training and watching/commentating on a scrimmage going on.
I feel lucky to be able to not only document the journey of our players at Galaxy, but also step outside and document a few of our players representing their national teams as well wether its them playing during a game or wearing their flags for media day.
This photo is important to me because when Zlatan first arrived at Galaxy, I was live editing and sending out all the iconic photos taken of him at the very first game agains LAFC. One season later, I was able to see the growth of going from editing and sending out photos to sitting on the field and taking my own photos of Zlatan walking into the smoke and off the field for the last time in a Galaxy jersey.
